Nicole Shapiro, CNM
Nicole joined West Suburban Midwife Associates in 2013 after receiving her master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Originally from Philadelphia, PA, her first experience with midwifery occurred at the age of 5 when she witnessed the home birth of her younger brother. Her desire to care for women was strengthened during her work as a volunteer doula for low-income patients in Philadelphia. Nicole was fortunate to be able to complete her doula training with DONA International founder and author Penny Simkin while pursing her bachelor’s degree at Brown University. After moving to Chicago, she became a Registered Nurse and worked in labor and delivery and postpartum at Swedish Covenant Hospital. She has experience caring for women in a variety of settings including community health centers, large university hospitals, and community hospitals with an emphasis on labor support and low intervention birth. These experiences have helped foster her philosophy of care; one that celebrates women’s inherent strength and self-awareness and encourages them to make informed decisions about their care. Nicole is ecstatic to be part of a midwifery practice that shares this vision.
Nicole currently serves as the vice president of the American College of Nurse Midwives Illinois Affiliate. In 2016, she had her own natural childbirth attended by 2 amazing midwives (Gayle and Cynthia!) in the ABC room at West Suburban Medical Center. She enjoys cooking, traveling, and gardening as well as taking advantage of the rich community resources present in Oak Park where she lives with her husband Alex, son Asher, and dog Ruby.
